Crabbing in Yaquina Bay, Newport Oregon

On a whim, we headed out to Newport to meet up with friends and go crabbing. Having never gone crustacean hunting (sounds more dangerous) we were in! Needless to say we had a great time and have now incorporated crabbing into the roll-a-dex of hobbies.

It was perfect weather for a Twilight Summer Ale!

We caught a few legal sized Dungeness crabs but released them because they were females. There was no shortage of Red Rock Crabs!

Spotted several different kinds of jellyfish, I scooped this one up in a 5 gallon bucket (we released it).

The fog broke for a good 30 minutes at night allowing us to see an incredible night sky.

Then the fog rolled in heavily. This is the Yaquina Bay Bridge illuminated by a tugboat in the fog.

For anyone looking for a quick and fun get away, this is a fun spot. The permits cost $7 each and last for the remainder of the year. We ended up renting 4 crabbing pots which cost $6 each for the day. I doubt i'll ever buy a crab from the store again!
